One moment you're jamming out to your favorite band on Spotify, and the next, complete and utter silence. Maybe you have your headset on while playing an online game with your friends, and then suddenly can't hear their chattering voices anymore.
There are many reasons why the sound is not working on your laptop. It could be a problem with the application or just your audio jack. In some cases, the issue is a simple fix, and then in others, you can't get a solution without going to a repair shop.
Here are a few different reasons why your audio may have kicked out and some troubleshooting steps you can try out at home.
1. Your Volume Controls Could be Off
Sometimes you get into a typing frenzy or you accidentally tap the mute button with your finger or elbow. Maybe your cat decided to walk across your laptop and press the mute button and you're left wondering why you don't have sound.
The first thing you want to do is see if the audio muted. This is a simple fix that just involves you clicking on your sound icon and checking to see if there is a red circle with a line going through it, or if the volume is just set very, very low.
It's one of the simplest reasons why the sound isn't working on your laptop but it's a mistake many make.
2. The Volume in the Application is Down
Another reason why you might be getting no sound on your laptop is if the sound in the application that you're running isn't working. Some of these applications have their own volume control.
Bring up Spotify or Youtube and check the volume slider in the corner. Sometimes if it's not muted it may just be set low. If this is the case, then drag the bar to increase the audio volume.
3. Bad Audio Drivers
If you've gone through the simple troubleshooting steps, then it's safe to say that you have a bigger problem. It's possible that your audio drivers are either not working, or you need to update them. Luckily, it's pretty easy to check them out.
Go to your device manager and click on sound, video, and game controllers. If you have a red or yellow exclamation mark next to your sound devices then something is up.
It's not too hard to update them. Just check and see which manufacturer is responsible for your drivers and try visiting their site. Usually, they'll have a download available so you can update the drivers.
4. Your Audio Device Might be Disabled
Sometimes your speaker is just disabled if it is, then you obviously won't get any sound out of them. This is a simple troubleshooting step that just involves you going into the control panel and clicking on sound.
If you look at it and it says that the speaker is disabled, just right click on it and select Enable. Doing this should bring your sound back.
5. Your Computer is Tired
The reason why most tech support places tell you to try turning your computer off and turning back on again is that it usually fixes the problem. Sometimes your laptop will start to act funny when it needs to be turned off to rest.
This can affect many aspects of your laptop, including your sound. Sometimes if you turn it off and let it rest for a bit before you turn it back on, that will fix any issues that you're having.
6. It Could be Your Headphone Jack
If you don't have sound coming out of your headphones, then chances are that problem involves the headphone jack rather than your speakers. There are a few troubleshooting steps that you can take to either fix this issue or test it.
First, disconnect your headphones. If the sound starts up again, then you defiantly know it's your jack. It could be possible that the jack is dirty and that's why it's not working.
All you have to do to fix that is get a soft brush or cotton ball and use it to wipe away any dirt or dust. The last thing you can try is plugging in a different pair of headphones. If that works then you know it's just a technical issue with that particular pair.
7. The Device You're Using isn't Set as the Default One
Sometimes, it could be a matter of the device you're using not being set up as the default. This would prevent it from playing. Right click on your volume icon and click playback devices.
There should be a green check mark next to the name of the device you're using. If there isn't then select it and click set default. After you do that, click okay to save it. You should be getting audio again after that.
