Repair, Upgrade or Replace: How to Decide When to Get a New Laptop

Nearly three-quarters of adults in the United States own a laptop or desktop computer. But what do you do if your laptop is making life difficult?

When it comes to laptops, you often get what you pay for, which can make it hard to know when to get a new laptop and when to try to extend its life with repairs.

In this post, you’ll learn the key signs that you need a new laptop, and when you can get away with repairing your laptop instead.

Ready? Let’s get started.

When to Get a New Laptop: Replace or Repair?

Deciding whether you should replace or repair your laptop is sometimes a big decision. You’ll need to consider if it’s cheaper to repair or replace, how much longer you’ll get out of the life of your laptop, and whether you actually need to get an issue fixed.

Here are some reasons you may be considering replacing or repairing your laptop:

It’s Too Slow

Your RAM and CPU determine how fast your laptop will run. While you can upgrade these components yourself with some laptops, it’s generally not easy to do.

While a slow laptop can drive you crazy, there are a few things you can do to speed it up before you consider taking it to an expert to get it looked at or replacing it.

First, take a look at how much free storage is left. When your laptop only has a small amount of space left, it can take longer to save files and programs can open take much longer to open. Now is a good time to use an external hard drive to move some of the larger files off your laptop so you can free up some space.

You may also notice that you have a lot of temporary files. These can take up a lot of space and slow down your laptop. Clear the cache in your browser and delete any temporary files your laptop is holding onto.

Believe it or not, but keeping your laptop clean can also make it work faster. If your vents are covered with crumbs, hair, and dust, the internal components will heat up much more quickly than they should. This makes them work harder than necessary, slowing down your laptop.

You Need More Storage

If you’re out of storage, you have plenty of options without necessarily needing to upgrade. First, you can begin storing more files on the cloud. There are a number of services like Dropbox, which will store everything you need for a monthly fee.

This keeps your documents safe in the event that your laptop is damaged beyond repair. You may also want to use an external hard drive to store important data, particularly if you like to download movies and music.

The Screen is Broken

Most people have dealt with a broken laptop screen at least once in the past and it’s not fun. Whether or not you need a replacement will depend on how badly the screen is damaged.

You can definitely replace or repair your screen, and it generally won’t cost as much as it would to replace your whole laptop.

It’s Not Charging

This can feel like the kiss of death for your laptop, but don’t panic. First, check if the problem is the charger itself. If you have a friend with the same brand of laptop, try their charger to see if your laptop begins charging.

If the battery is dead, it can be replaced relatively easily. If your battery can be removed, remove it and plug your laptop into the wall. If your laptop powers up, you have a problem with the battery.

If you can’t remove the battery yourself (common with Apple computers), take it to your trusted retailer or repair store so they can take a look.

Your Laptop is Old

Just because your laptop has been around the block a few times doesn’t necessarily mean you need to replace it. But if you’re having constant issues and you use your laptop often, it may be worth springing for a new one.

As a general rule, laptops that are under two years are usually worth repairing. If your laptop is three or four years old, you may want to consider how much the repairs will cost and how healthy your finances are. Often, repairs on a laptop older than four years won’t be worth it.

The Problem is Significant

This is where it’s worth talking to a trusted repair service and getting advice from an expert. If your hard drive is failed, it may be a pain to deal with but could only cost a few hundred dollars to repair.

However, if the main logic board is dead, it often won’t be worth repairing. While you can try to discern the problem yourself, it will often be a better idea to get expert advice about whether it’s worth repairing a significant problem.

Have You Considered a Used Laptop?

While many people assume they’ll need to upgrade to a brand new laptop if it’s not worth fixing their problem, you do have another option. Laptops tend to die when we can least afford to replace them. That’s why a used laptop can be a great middle ground.

If you’re hoping to upgrade to a laptop with a higher price point in a few years, but you want a reliable laptop in the meantime, a used laptop is an affordable middle ground.

Wrapping Up

It can be difficult to know just when to get a new laptop. But by using the above tips, you’ll be able to determine whether you need to go for a brand new device, or whether you can get the problem repaired.

If you’re having issues with your laptop and you’re not sure whether you should upgrade, we can help. Get in touch today and we’ll take a look at your laptop so you can benefit from expert advice before you make your decision.

So far, it hasn't been that great. I took a laptop in almost 2 weeks ago and... haven't heard back from them. When I went in to drop it off, it was like they were getting ready to go out of business. The young guy who took my laptop said he would call me and hasn't yet. I know that we have had 2 weeks of holidays, but other businesses are open again. He made sure he got my $45 first though. I'm surprised by all of this, because I've gotten great service when the father was there. In this guy's response, he says that he can't get a hold of me. What he fails to mention is that he wrote my number down wrong and didn't check his caller ID from when I called last Monday or when I left a message the week before. I left a message last week and he never called me back then either. When he did finally found my number, he chewed me out for everything. He never confirmed anything about the computer, yet acts like he did. So my number is not out of service, but I will not be a customer of theirs more

Am new to the area having problems with tower computer at the time. Was... advised to seek a locally owned business doing computer repair. I did and chose Community Computer Services in Alexandria, Ky. 41001. Did diagnostics as I was thinking problem with hard drive. Wasn't which was great price wise. Was able to clear out all viruses and malware. Saved my pictures and other personal folders and reloaded to computer. Also installed free virus and malware programs. Runs fast!! Also they gave me a week to use to see if incurred any problems. I did not!!! While taking care of tower computer explained how slow my laptop was. So brought it in. Was going to do diagnostics see what problem was. He told me it would be like a new computer. Advised me to use chrome. He saved my files and reloaded them so where I didn't lose anything. Also downloaded the free virus protection and malware. The laptop is brand new to me. It is fantastic!!!! So fast it has to wait on me. My computer quit working just as my wife was in the middle of using it for... Vacation Bible School last night. She was panicking. I began to look online and saw Community Computers near where I live. I checked the reviews and it had a great rating. I called this morning and explained my situation. I was told to bring my laptop in and he would see what he could do. When I took it in I also shared with him another issue I had been experiencing, my wireless connection was not working . He said he would really try to find out the issue so we would have it for Bible School. About 2 1/2 hours later he called to give the good news that the problem was just a bad cord. When picking it up he also told me he gave it a good checking over and tried to repair my non wireless connection for over an hour. He then told me instead of trying to go into the laptop to change a chip which could be costly, he sent me to Staples for a solution of a $30.00 wireless adapter. I was very impressed with my experience Community Computers. I would encourage anyone who has computer issues to check them out. You will not be disappointed. Also, the price I paid was very more
