Desktop Graphics Card Troubleshooting:
When a desktop comes into our computer shop with the problem being there is nothing showing up on the screen, the first thing we check is the video card, if it is a video adapter that is not attached to the motherboard and can be replaced.
This problem can be caused by a few different problems but a lot of the time it is their video card causing problems or gone bad.
We typically have graphics cards in our shop that we can swap out to see if that takes care of the problem. There is no way to test the actual video card, so it’s basically trying out other graphics cards.
Graphics Card Repair:
It is usually not worth trying to repair a graphics card due to how reasonable they are in price. The problem is there are a million different options, and it depends on what the customer does with their computer. First thing to determine is what type of connection does it require from your motherboard. Most of newer video cards are PCI Express slots. We look up model number of the motherboard to see exactly what type the board will accept.
Graphics Card Upgrades:
If everything is working properly other than playing high end games, auto cad, or high video processing, it might be time for a graphics card upgrade. We research what video cards are compatible, and then will call the customer with some pricing options. There are a few things for us to keep in mind. A lot of graphics cards these days have a separate power connection that is required from you power supply. We like Nvidia, and MSI video cards. They are good quality, and at fairly reasonable prices. Usually for average video cards they are anywhere between $50 to $150. Some of the high end cards are $150 to $500
